What is Beat Motion Studio?
Beat Motion Studio automatically creates beat-synchronized video mixes from your own clips. The app analyzes BPM and beats of the selected song, evaluates your videos, and cuts everything precisely to the beat — completely locally on your iPhone, no cloud, no upload.
Creating your first mix
Add videos: Tap "+" and select clips from your photo library. You can select multiple videos at once.
Choose a song: Tap "Add Music" and select a track from your Apple Music library.
Adjust settings: Choose export length, cut length (Note Value), transition style, and format (9:16 or 16:9).
Generate the mix: Tap "Create Mix". The app analyzes the videos and song and builds the mix automatically.
Preview & export: The export screen shows a live preview. Transition style, filters, and effects can still be changed live. Then tap "Save" or go directly to Instagram.
iPadOnce selected, the clips appear as tiles. Use Add more videos at any time, and drag a tile to change the order.
System Requirements
Beat Motion Studio requires iOS 17.0 or later. iOS 18 is recommended. The app runs on iPhone and iPad.
Videos & Clips
Videos & Clips
(Pro)
How many videos can I add?
In the Free tier, up to 8 videos. With Standard or Pro, the number is unlimited. The more varied clips you use, the more dynamic your mix will be.
What video formats are supported?
All video formats supported by iOS and present in your photo library: MP4, MOV, and HEVC. The app uses Apple's PHAsset system for access.
Are my original videos modified?
No. Beat Motion Studio only reads the video data; your original clips in the photo library are not modified. The finished mix is saved as a new file in the camera roll.
What is the video editor? (Pro)
The video editor is where you refine the automatic mix. The timeline runs along the bottom: one tile per cut, with transition markers and the song's waveform underneath. Tap a tile and the settings on the right apply to that single cut only — so one moment can get a different transition or filter without touching the rest.
Reorder: press and hold a tile, then drag it to its new position.
Choose the framing: "Choose region" decides which part of a landscape clip stays visible in portrait.
Per cut: transition, filter, effect and overlay can each be set individually.
Visible immediately: the preview keeps rendering in the background and never blanks while you edit.
iPadThe video editor on iPad: preview on the left, Transition, Filter, Effect and Overlays all visible at once on the right, and the timeline below with every cut, the transition markers and the waveform.
How do I unlock the video editor?
The editor is part of Pro. In the free tier and in Standard you'll see the "Video Editor" button above the preview with a padlock. Tapping it opens the overview of Standard and Pro — both are one-time purchases, no subscription.
iPhoneThe padlock on the Video Editor button means Pro is missing.iPhoneThe overview spells out exactly what each tier adds.
Musik & BPM
Music & BPM
Was ist BMS Musik?
Was bedeutet „Schnittlänge" (Note Value)?
Was ist Dynamic Mix?
How is BPM detected?
Beat Motion Studio analyzes the song locally via Spectral Flux + Autocorrelation. Not only BPM and beat grid are detected, but also kicks, snares, drops, build-ups, and breaks — for maximum dynamics in the cut plan.
What music can I use?
There are three sources, all reachable via Music → Select:
Apple Music / Library — songs stored in the Music app on your device. No streaming: the file has to be local.
Files / Dropbox — MP3, AAC, WAV or M4A from the file system.
BMS Music — royalty-free label tracks, built into the app. Ideal when your video goes public and you'd rather not deal with rights holders.
iPadThe source picker. Recently used tracks sit at the bottom — the quickest way back to a song you've already worked with.
What is BMS Music?
A catalogue of royalty-free label music inside the app. You can search by title, artist or genre and filter by style. BPM and the beat grid are already stored for every track, so the analysis step is skipped and the mix is ready sooner.
iPadThe catalogue is grouped by label; you confirm the terms of use once.
What does "Cut Length" (Note Value) mean?
Cut length determines the minimum duration of a clip in the mix, expressed in musical note values. Nine levels are available — from 1/8 (very fast, e.g. 0.25 s at 120 BPM) to 8/1 (very slow, 16 s at 120 BPM). Shorter values = more cuts = more action.
What is Dynamic Mix?
With Dynamic Mix, the algorithm automatically adjusts cut length to the energy level of the music: at kicks and drops, clips are cut shorter; during quieter phases, they're longer. This makes the mix breathe with the music.
iPhoneEverything that drives the timing in one place: Dynamic Mix, cut length, strict timeline and the randomness slider. With the strict timeline on, cuts below 1/1 are greyed out — a finer grid would only chop up a clip that is meant to run through.
Übergänge
Transitions
Welche Übergangsstile gibt es?
Hard Cut – Kein Übergang, direkter Schnitt (Standard)
What transition styles are available?
Hard Cut – No transition, direct cut (default)
Fade – Default: clip briefly fades in from black (~18% of clip duration). With the length slider, this becomes a real cross-dissolve: both clips overlap, the incoming one fading over the outgoing.
Wipe – Push-wipe: the next video slides in while the current one slides out. Direction (Left/Right/Up/Down/Random) and duration are freely adjustable.
Random – Each cut deterministically picks a random style; which styles are in the pool is configurable via long-press
Transitions can be switched live in the export preview — no re-rendering needed.
The first clip never animates in — why?
This is by design: the first clip always starts as a hard cut. Only subsequent clips receive transitions.
Filter & Effekte
Filters & Effects
Colour-Grading-Filter
11 Filter stehen zur Auswahl (plus „Original"): Chrom, Soft Fade, Instant, Process, Transfer, Sepia, S/W Mono, S/W Noir, S/W Sanft, Vintage Warm, Cool Teal.
Visuelle Effekte
10 Effekte: Vignette, Pixel, Scanlines, Altes Video, Glitch, Comic, Mosaik, Bloom, Bleistift, Bewegung.
Color Grading Filters
11 filters are available (plus "Original"): Chrome, Soft Fade, Instant, Process, Transfer, Sepia, B&W Mono, B&W Noir, B&W Soft, Vintage Warm, Cool Teal. Filters are applied in a second render pass on the finished video.
Visual Effects
10 effects: Vignette, Pixel, Scanlines, Old Video, Glitch, Comic, Mosaic, Bloom, Pencil, Motion. Filters and effects can be combined.
What do Pencil and Motion do?
Pencil turns your video into a pencil-sketch look with two independent intensity sliders: Shading (dodge-blend for a soft gray-pencil background) and Strokes (CIEdges overlay for crisp outlines). Both sliders work independently — use just lines, just shading, or combine them for a full sketch look.
Motion adds a speed-blur effect with a radial mask: the center of the frame stays sharp while the edges receive motion blur, giving an action-camera feel. Intensity is fully adjustable.
Which effects have an intensity slider?
Pencil, Comic, Mosaic, Bloom, Motion, Scanlines, and Old Film — 7 effects in total. The slider appears directly below the effect pills as soon as that effect is active.
What do the variants for "Old Film" mean?
Old Film is a real Film-FX overlay (HEVC with alpha) and offers two variants via a segmented control: Subtle (default) for a restrained vintage look and Heavy for a pronounced retro effect. Scanlines is also implemented as a Film-FX overlay (not a CIFilter), with its own intensity slider, defaulting to 50%.
Are Flash frames filtered?
No. Flash frames and the outro card are intentionally passed through unfiltered, so the strobe effect stays white and the Beat Motion Studio logo appears in the correct brand colors.
Can I test filters in the preview?
Yes. The export preview shows filters and effects live via Metal rendering — without a new export process.
Where do I find transition, filter, effect and overlays?
All four live in the export screen, but they look different per device. On iPhone a bar of six icons sits under the preview — tap one and the matching panel opens above it. On iPad they are all open at once on the right, no expanding and collapsing.
iPhoneThe Filter panel is open and its icon in the bar is highlighted. The Intensity slider blends the filter against the original — 0 % is off, 100 % is full.iPadOn iPad, Label, Transition, Filter, Effect and Overlays sit side by side. Duration, number of cuts and resolution are shown top left.
Overlays & Content Packs
Overlays & Content Packs
Was sind Overlays?
Was sind Content Packs?
Was bedeutet „Nur bei Drops"?
What are overlays?
Overlays are placed on top of your finished video — either as animated effect loops (.mov) or static images (.png). You can combine up to two overlays simultaneously, for example an animated fire loop and a decorative image frame at the same time.
What are Content Packs?
Content Packs are server-hosted overlay packages that you can download once inside the app. Packs are unlocked by tier: free packs (e.g. standard effects portrait & landscape) are available to all users. Certain premium packs are Standard- or Pro-exclusive and automatically included in their respective tiers.
How do I download overlays?
In the export screen, open the Overlays panel and tap More overlays. The pack store lists every pack with a preview, the number of overlays, the format (portrait or landscape), the file size and the tier it's included in. Tap Download and it's yours offline. On a new device, Restore purchases brings everything back.
iPadThe pack store. "Included in: Free" means the pack needs no purchase — every pack states its tier.iPadDownloaded overlays on top — the crossed-out tile on the left switches them off. Drops only runs the animation at the loud moments instead of continuously. Resolution and Format sit below.
How do I activate two overlays at once?
In the overlay gallery, simply tap a second overlay while one is already active. You can freely combine one animation and one image. In the video editor the control bar shows both active overlays separated by "+".
What does "Drops only" mean?
When this toggle is active, overlays only appear during detected drop moments of the song, not throughout the entire video. Ideal for energetic highlights.
Labels & Sticker
Labels & Stickers
Kachel-Abzeichen.
Einblendung: Labels weich erscheinen lassen
System Bold, Rounded, Georgia, Mono, Typewriter, Chalk.
How do I add a text label?
Both the export screen and the Video Editor have a Label button in the control bar. Use it to add text, an emoji or a graphic – the input appears as a small card above the picture, the video stays visible. In the picture, tap a label to select it, drag to move, pinch to scale and twist to rotate; the corner handle does both at once. Double-tap deletes it. At most three labels in the picture at a time, eight in total.
Labels on specific clips only (Pro)
In the Video Editor every label has a visibility range: whole mix, only this clip or from clip A to clip B (or to the end). When adding, the card asks for it and defaults to “From here” – the clip the playhead is on. Later you change the range in the label’s row under Visible.
One list for all labels. Each row carries a chip with its range (Mix, Clip 3, Clip 3–4, Clip 3–End). A label that is not in the picture at the current position is greyed out – tapping it jumps to its start.
Mini timeline in the label panel. It shows all clips, a bar per label above them and the playhead. Tap to jump to a clip, drag to move the playhead. What you see in the picture is exactly what the finished video shows at that point.
Tile badges. “Aa” on a tile means a label starts on this clip; with an arrow, a label continues here.
In the export screen, labels always apply to the whole mix. Labels you placed on individual clips in the editor still show up there – with their range chip in the list.
Appearance: fade labels in softly
The Appearance chip at the top of the label panel (export screen and editor) applies to all labels: Off, Fade or Slide – for Slide also the direction (from left, right, top or bottom) – plus the duration from 0.1 to 1.5 seconds. Every label fades in at the start of its range and out at its end; a whole-mix label at the start and end of the video. The preview shows the animation during playback exactly as it ends up in the export.
What fonts are available?
System Bold, Rounded, Georgia, Mono, Typewriter, Chalk.
Can I insert emojis?
Yes — using the system emoji keyboard, emojis, Memojis, and stickers can be inserted as PNG images into the video.
Portrait and landscape — independent configurations?
Yes. Portrait labels and landscape labels are completely independent. When first switching to a new format, the labels from the other format are adopted as a starting point.
Export & Teilen
Export & Sharing
The preview looks blurry – what can I do?
From version 1.5 onwards the preview renders at a resolution that matches your device. If it hasn't refreshed after loading your clips, wait a moment – the app creates lightweight proxy copies of your source clips the first time it processes them (roughly 20–80 s for 4K material). After that the preview is sharp and more than twice as fast as in earlier versions.
Why does a black frame appear briefly when I change transition, format or orientation?
This should no longer happen from version 1.5 onwards. The preview keeps playing while the new version renders in the background. If you still see it, update the app to the latest version.
What export options are available?
Save to camera roll – MP4 saved directly to photo library
Instagram Story – Video opened as Instagram Story (Instagram must be installed)
Instagram Reel – Video opened as Reel
Share (AirDrop, TikTok, WhatsApp, …) – iOS standard share sheet
What resolutions and formats are available?
Format: 9:16 (portrait, ideal for Stories/Reels) or 16:9 (landscape). Resolution: 720p, 1080p, or 4K (4K with Pro only).
How long can my mix be?
In the Free tier, a maximum of 20 seconds. With Standard or Pro: 15, 30, 60, 90, or 120 seconds.
Are exports cached?
Yes. As long as the style, filter, effect, resolution, and format remain unchanged, the cached export is reused. A new "Save" or "Story" export doesn't require a new render pass.
What is the outro card?
In the Free tier, every mix ends with a 2-second Beat Motion Studio outro card (logo + sound effect). With Standard or Pro, this is disabled.
iPhone & iPad
iPhone & iPad
Does Beat Motion Studio run on iPad?
Yes — fully native. Beat Motion Studio supports iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 or later. iOS 18 is recommended. All features, all packs, all effects are fully available on both devices.
What does the video editor look like on iPad in landscape?
In landscape the preview sits on the left with all settings right next to it – transition, filter, effect, overlays, format and labels all visible at once, no switching needed. On iPhone the portrait layout and floating control bar remain as you know them.
What is the floating control bar?
The control bar with chips for transition, filter, effect, resolution, format, and label is a freely repositionable floating bar in portrait mode. Use a long-press and drag to move it vertically. A double-tap resets it to its default position.
Are there any differences between iPhone and iPad?
No — full feature parity. No feature is withheld from iPad. Differences only concern the landscape layout, which is especially well-suited to the larger iPad display.
Projekte & eigene Styles
Projects & own styles
How do I save a project?
Use Save in the videos row. You give it a name and decide what goes with it:
Embed videos — the clips are copied into the project, so it still opens after you've deleted the originals from your photo library. The size shown tells you the cost up front.
Without embedding, only references are stored. The project stays tiny but needs the original clips.
Embed audio is greyed out for licensed label music — that track is fetched again automatically when loading.
iPadThe save dialog summarises what ends up in the project: number of videos, track and duration.
How do I open a saved project?
Tap Projects at the top right. The overview shows each project with a thumbnail, clip count, BPM and date. Tapping one restores every setting — transitions, filters, labels and the clip order. Saving again overwrites the same project instead of creating a second one.
Worth knowing:New starts an empty project and discards the current one. Save it first if you want to keep it.
How do I save my own style?
A style is the combination of transition, filter, effect and cut settings — the look, not the content. When the export screen shows something you like, tap Save style, give it a name, done. It then appears under Style preset on the start screen alongside the built-in ones and can be applied to any new project with a single tap.
iPadJust a name — everything else is taken from your current settings.
Saving and editing your own styles is part of Pro. The built-in presets — EDM Festival, House, Cinematic, Vlog, Comic/Anime and more — work in every tier.

Instagram findet kein Video
Try a shorter cut length (Note Value). For music with unclear BPM (very slow or very fast), it can help to adjust the song start point in settings so the analysis begins from a clear beat moment.
The export is taking very long
4K exports are computationally intensive. For fast results, we recommend 1080p. Also: when a filter or effect is active, a second render pass is executed (Pass 1: cuts + transitions; Pass 2: filter). This is normal.
Instagram can't find any video
Make sure Instagram is installed and up to date on your iPhone. If the share button is grayed out, Instagram is not installed. The video was previously saved to the camera roll — you can manually upload it from there.
Can I use Apple Music streaming tracks?
Only tracks you have downloaded locally on your device (download icon in the Music app). Streaming tracks that haven't been downloaded are not accessible for analysis.
